“The Producer” Adds Kim Jong Kook to the Already Stellar Lineup with IU, Kim Soo Hyun, Chae Tae Hyun, and Gong Hyo Jin

As if the star studded lineup for the new drama “The Producer” with IU, Kim Soo Hyun, Chae Tae Hyung, and Gong Hyo Jin wasn’t enough, they have recently added Kim Jong Kook to the cast.

producer cast

The drama is penned by Park Ji Eun who is also the writer of the mega-hit series “You Who Came From The Stars” which made Kim Soo Hyun a household name throughout Asia. The drama is set in the variety entertainment department of a broadcast station. Gong Hyo Jin, Chae Tae Hyun, Kim Jong Kook and Kim Soo Hyun will play PDs. Gong Hyo Jin will play a PD who has been with a music program for 10 years and has a sharp personality. Kim Jong Kook and Chae Tae Hyun will play variety show PDs while Kim Jong Kook is senior to Chae Tae Hyun. Kim Soo Hyun will play a rookie PD. IU will play a singer with a diva attitude that is typically seen in superstars.

Although Kim Jong Kook has been in the entertainment business for more than 20 years as a singer and variety star, “The Producer” will be Kim Jong Kook’s debut as an actor. I suspect the PD’s character that he is playing would be similar to his well known image as a nagger and perfectionist on “Running Man” where he constantly takes leadership in directing people on how to do things.

His authoritative image as “sparta kook” and “tiger” would definitely serve in his favor of looking like a leader. I think the casting director watched lots of Running Man and found his coaching behavior to resemble the character that they had in mind so they casted him. Kim Jong Kook would be more or less just playing himself since he normally acts like a director in his daily life and I don’t mind that. His muscular body is the only aspect I find that doesn’t resemble a normal PD.

Chae Tae Hyun has always been an outrageous person. He has always played comedic roles in films and brought viewers lots of laughters. In the few times that I’ve seen him on variety shows,  I find that he’s the type of guy that would reveal all your secrets, has a quick mind with a sharp tongue, and loves to play pranks. With him in this drama, we can expect lots of laughter and goofiness to happen.

IU has already had a couple dramas under her belt starting with “Dream High”, which also starred Kim Soo Hyun and can be said to be the drama that kickstarted their road to fame, “You’re the Best, Lee Soon Shim” and “Pretty Man”. Her characters in the past has been mainly sweet, innocent, hardworking characters and this will be a change for her where she will be taking on the role of a diva singer with a cold personality. When I first saw IU, she was doing her promotions for Good Day and my first thought was that she looked like an arrogant mean girl type of star. Of course, I found out later that she is a sweet and humble star but I think she would have no problem in portraying that star with a cold and arrogant personality.

Honestly, I have always been a big fan of hers and even if it was just her in the cast, I would have already decided to watch this drama. The director for “You’re the Best, Lee Soon Shin” has once said that IU was a genius in acting and that she knows very well how to express herself in respect to the situation. I am proud that she has received such praise and will look forward to her portrayal of a diva singer.

There has yet to be any news of how the characters will be paired up and I actually don’t mind how the characters will be paired up since all the cast are all favorites of mine. However, I would like it if Kim Soo Hyun and IU have a love line together, but I wouldn’t mind if they paired up Kim Soo Hyun with Gong Hyo Jin. Gong Hyo Jin has always impressed me with her roles. When I first saw the promotional posters for “Greatest Love” I didn’t have a  good impression of her, but became her fan immediately after watching the drama. Her following dramas “Master’s Sun” and “It’s Okay, That’s Love” were all exceptional and I can even say that all these drama are my top favorites. Each character that she plays has a completely different personality and she is also able to bring out aspects of each character so that it would leave a lasting impression on the viewers. Her onscreen chemistry with her costars were also a success to me, especially in “It’s Okay, That Love” where her interactions with Jo In Sung were very natural. Hence, I don’t mind if she gets paired up with Kim Soo Hyun. Kim Soo Hyun has already had the experience of being paired up with noonas so I don’t think it will be a problem for him either.

This is Kim Soo Hyun’s first drama project after “You Who Came From The Stars”. Out of all the dramas that he has been in, the character that I like the most is the country bumpkin Song Sam Dong from “Dream High”.

The actual PD of this drama is Seo Soo Min who has been a variety show PD for “Gag Concert” and “1 Night 2 Days”.

It’s been said that the script reading will be next month and the drama is set to air in April or early May during the Friday-Saturday 11 PM time slot.

This is a drama that I am 100% going to watch and I am just waiting for it to be released. So bring it on.

How do you want the characters to be paired?
