Lots of angst in this episode as we see our couple finally interacting with each other.
Mo Sheng has just left the law firm after returning Yi Cheng her picture and Yi Cheng runs after her. While Mo Sheng is walking away, she thinks to herself that she was so naive back in college. No matter how cold Yi Cheng acted, she was able to smile brightly and trail after him all the time but now she doesn’t even have the courage to even speak with him.
I thought he would show up running after her but even better, she showed up in a car and told her to get in.
In the car, Yi Cheng asks her chinese or western food in which Mo Sheng emotionlessly replies chinese. He then sarcastically says I thought you wouldn’t know how to use a chopstick anymore (making a reference to her being in America for so long, forgetting how to use a chopstick) and explains that it would make sense for him to treat her to a meal for returning his wallet. C’mon people just because you live in the US doesn’t mean you don’t use a chopstick. He’s obviously just trying to find a logical excuse to see her longer but he couldn’t lower his pride and ask kindly.
He orders her favorite sweet and sour pork ribs and they eat solemnly.
Yi Mei calls Yi Cheng at just the right moment and finds that he is eating with Mo Sheng. She asks him to pass the phone to Mo Sheng. Yi Mei asks Mo Sheng is she has been living well in America and also asks for her phone number. Hearing Mo Sheng say her number, Yi Cheng looked concerned. When she hangs up, Yi Cheng bluntly tells her to input her phone number and name into his phone. When she hesitates, he sharply remarks: “what, you don’t even remember how to write your chinese name?” This guy is obviously covering up his real intentions with all those snarky remarks.
Yi Cheng drops Mo Sheng home and while she walks up to her apartment, Yi Cheng calls and says he forgot to tell her that he needs to meet up with her to discuss more about Xiao Xiao’s lawsuit. I think he’s calling to verify that Mo Sheng gave him a proper working number. Mo Sheng says she can’t make it to the meeting at 8 in which Yi Cheng quickly says to meet in the afternoon. He then tells her to take down his cell phone number and quickly hangs up before she could find an excuse to avoid the meeting.
Yuan Feng, fond of Yi Mei, has been waiting for her at the broadcast station where she works. He trails after Yi Mei when she gets off from work and finally finds a chance to speak to her. He starts off saying it was such a coincidence but Yi Mei tells him directly that she knew he was following her. She thens asks for his opinion as a bystander: “If a female has been by a man’s side for 10-15 years but he was never moved (by her actions), does that mean the women does not have a chance?” Yuan Feng says “if I have to reply then I would say, move on because number one, I have an ulterior motive (referring he wanting to date her) but number two, if after so many years, the man did not fall in love with the women, then the two really aren’t compatible.” Yet, he leaves the answer open and says since love is a complicated matter, you really can’t tell what the outcome is. Yi Mei says that after loving the man for so many years, it’s a pity to throw it away in which Yuan Feng also agrees with her. She then convinces herself that she should work hard at pursuing her love, one last time.
Mo Sheng arrives at the law firm but finding no one inside, she gives Yi Cheng a call. He then lets her into the office and asks her to wait for him in the waiting area while he makes a final business call. This is the same area she had waited at when she had asked for a place to stay while waiting for Xiao Xiao to get off work for in college. Their interactions with each other are all courteous and polite but with a lack of emotions. They are both being carefully polite with each other and both are trying to act like they have moved on from the past.
Yi Cheng explains that in this meeting he will be asking her a few questions as the representative lawyer of Xiao Xiao.
Yi Cheng: According to your provided documents you graduated from US. Which year?
Mo Sheng: 2004
Yi Cheng: What’s the date?
MS: September of 2004
in which Yi Cheng looks at her sternly and states that it is the exact date he wanted.
MS: September 29, 2004
YC: Which city in the US did you stay at?
MS: I went to New York to study.
YC: Which College?
Mo Sheng replies that it is stated in her documents but Yi Cheng apologizes and asks her to repeat it again in which she says it in english but Yi Cheng says he’s not fluent in english and asks for the chinese name. After hearing the chinese name, he says that he is not knowledgable enough and to excuse him for a second to look up the school. While he is checking out the college he says: “It’s not a bad school. It’s one of the top 10 schools for photographers. It’s definitely worth abandoning everything, leaving everything behind and going faraway for it.” Mo Sheng only looks down. This was his goal. He wanted to keep reminding her and making her feel guilty for leaving him.
YC: After finishing your studies, you continued to stay in New York for work?
MS: No, after graduating, I went to Los Angeles.
MS: Is this related to the lawsuit?
YC: I consider it to be related to the lawsuit.
MS stutters: It’s because of some personal reasons and there is also a nice job there.
YC: After that you continued with photography related jobs?
YC: I saw your portfolio. You had taken pictures of many international stars and celebrities. With such a stellar job, why did you decide to return to China?
Mo Sheng looks up be doesn’t speak.
YC repeats: Why did you give up your successful career and return to China?
MS: There no reason.
YC: When did you return back to the country?
MS: June 6 of this year.
He then abruptly packs up and says that he will have his assistant review over everything and advises the magazine office should prepare for a lawsuit. Upon hearing that, Mo Sheng asks if they could switch to a different photographer to avoid a lawsuit but Yi Cheng apologizes and says it’s in the contract that his client has the right to cancel the contract and ask for a compensation. Mo Sheng then ask how much the compensation fee would be since this incident had risen because of her and she wanted to pay the compensation fee out of her own pocket. Yi Cheng addresses her as Miss Zhao and says that he knows she doesn’t have to worry about money (referring that she is rich) but he wouldn’t be able to reveal the amount and leaves. He turns back and advises her that it’s best to talk with Xiao Xiao first since they used to be friends and added that Xiao Xiao did not intend for a lawsuit. Mo Sheng asks what is Xiao Xiao’s intention was but not wanting to say that Xiao Xiao wanted them to work out their misunderstandings, he tells her to ask Xiao Xiao and leaves.
Yuan Feng bumps into Xiao Xiao at the photography studio and gets into an argument with her causing the hot-headed Xiao Xiao to order Yi Cheng to issue the lawsuit immediately.
Yi Cheng was in the midst of an interview with Yi Mei in which she uses the chance to asks a personal question that she want to know- what his ideal type is like. Yi Cheng says to skip over this questions but Yi Mei not wanting to miss this opportunity, continues that a lot of people at her office is curious in which Yi Cheng interrupts saying that she knows who he likes. Yi Mei then asks him if he is certain that it can only be her (mo sheng) in which he doesn’t reply. Yi Mei then changes the topic quickly and says that they should head out to eat.
At dinner, Yi Mei talks about that time that when Yi Cheng first came to her house, she was only nine. Upon hearing that Yi Mei’s college roommate already has a baby, Yi Cheng glumly reveals that he had planned to marry when he graduated from college but then seeing Yi Mei look at him, he forced a smile. Yi Mei wanted to confess but abandons that thought and asks Yi Cheng if he would consider someone else (other than Mo Sheng) since she has a friend that want her to introduce him to her. Yi Cheng smiles but doesn’t answer.
He heads to the bathroom after picking up the tab. Yi Mei opens his wallet to return the extra change brought back by the waiter and finds Mo Sheng’s picture in his wallet.
Mo Sheng and Yuan Feng is finishing up their work. As Mo Sheng is about to leave, Yuan Feng asks Mo Sheng if she knew about Yi Mei’s past because he wants to date her. Mo Sheng says he won’t be able to date her since she already has a boyfriend. However Yuan Feng reveals that she doesn’t have a boyfriend and that she has only been secretly loving a person causing Mo Sheng to be stunned since Mo Sheng had thought all along that Yi Cheng had originally left her so be with Yi Mei.
Before splitting up and heading home, Yi Cheng tells Yi Mei that she will understand later on and says: “When that (special) someone appears, anyone else that shows up, I would just be accommodating with. I don’t want to accommodate. ” (note: the word that he uses does not have a direct english translation. The meaning is more like if it’s not that person, he won’t love anyone else and will only be putting up with her or get used to her.) This is such a nice quote. Yi Cheng is basically telling Yi Mei that he won’t love anyone else aside from Mo Sheng and hints that she should give up on him. Yi Mei smiles but as she turns her head away, her smiles turns into despair.
Xiao Xiao’s scandal is all over the internet where pictures of Xiao Xiao in bed with another man is the current hot topic. As the gossipers in the magazine office were looking at those photos, Yuan Feng supports the scandal saying the reason why she was normally so arrogant is because there is a rich person backing her up. Mo Sheng quickly refutes that saying she is not that type of a person. Mo Sheng then looks at the photos in detail and finds that the photos have been photoshopped.
The highlight of this episode had to be the scene where Yi Cheng used Xiao Xiao’s lawsuit as an excuse to meet Mo Sheng to have her personally explain to him why she left him, to find out where lived while she was in the US and to express his resentment over being abandoned. After the whole scene, I realized that the office was empty because he didn’t want other to see him asking all those unnecessary questions. He wants to yell at her for abandoning him but in order to maintain his image, he transformed his resentment into a questions and answer session. The first time I watched this, I wanted Mo Sheng to explain everything to him so he would quit with all the sarcasm and caustic language. I could not stand any more with those double meanings and read-between-the-lines in all his words. I absolutely hate people who talks like that. Also he keep on saying that Mo Sheng abandoned him. Does he not remember that he told Mo Sheng that he doesn’t want to see her anymore?
However there is a saying that the more you hate someone is because the more you care about that person. Everyone at his office could tell he was still in love with Mo Sheng. No matter what he says, his actions ends up telling others what he truly cares about. I also like that he doesn’t give Yi Mei any hope.
