The Palace : Lock Heart aka 宮-鎖心玉 Review
Synopsis: Qing Chuan, played by Yang Mi, a modern girl is accidentally transported back into Emperor Kang Xi’s era of the Qing Dynasty. (this is the exact same time period with exact same characters that Ruo Xi has been transported back to in Scarlet Heart). She falls into a love triangle between the 8th prince, played by Feng Shaofeng, and 4th prince, played by Mickey He. She tries to use her knowledge of the future to keep herself alive in a period where one misstep will cause you to be beheaded.
Broadcast Period 1/31/2011- 2/19/2011
I started watching this drama because I am still entranced by Sound of the Desert and can’t get it out of my mind and I still thirsting for some kind of romance that takes place back in the historical time period. While I was searching for historical dramas I found that this one was already making a third season so it had to be good and decided to watch this one.
While I am watching this, I didn’t feel like I like this a lot, especially with all the similarities in plots from other dramas and mundane storyline, however I was surprised that I was on the last episode on the 4th day of watching this. At one point I felt that the writers wasn’t creative at all and just copied the Meteor Garden plot which led to my lower rating. It definitely has a good mix of romance and the typical battle of the brain to scheme for the power of the throne. However, I felt that the plot was a bit choppy and farfetched since the main character abruptly goes from one place to another and people just randomly gets tied back together. I didn’t feel quite moved by this drama and didn’t shed tears until the final episode. Also the men in this drama didn’t feel quite manly and charismatic compared to the male characters in Sound of Desert or Scarlet Heart. Despite some similarities in plot to other drama, I felt this was a good watch if you have free time. If you want to watch a historical drama and you’ve have already watched Scarlet Heart and Sound of Desert (which I felt both was definitely more superb) and still want to watch a historical drama, you can try this one.
One aspect that I have to say is less charming for me is that the male characters doesn’t seem to have much intelligence compared to the female characters-hence me saying that the men were less manly. I felt that near the end of the drama, what eventually led the 4th prince to be the successor was because of the women helping him and not because of his intellect or power. There didn’t seem to be any critical decisions made from him but relied on his wife for what to do next. All the men in this drama always say I want to protect my loved one but there aren’t any plots that we actually see the men sacrificing themselves. I would say that 8th prince’ attempt to kill himself to save Qing Chuan and the eunuch who did everything he can to keep Consort Xi favored by the Emperor was the most valiant and evidence of true love.
In this drama, I don’t have a most favorable scene but the episodes I hated the most were scenes that were exactly identical to Meteor Garden storyline and when Qing Chuan had a replica that tried to take her place.
The one thing I felt this drama was interesting was that there was Consort Liang who was also a person from the 21 century and there was a happy ending.
Comments from certain episodes:
ep 4 how come the storyline is becoming exactly like Meteor Garden. 8th Prince is bullying someone, she speaks up for her and end up being targeted by 8th Prince. 9th Prince sends someone to rape her but she is saved by 4th Prince. Because she is the only one that has the courage to stand up to 8th prince, he feels that she is different than others and falls in love with her. This is the same exact storyline in Meteor Garden when Dao Ming Zi bully’s San Chai’s friend. She stands up for her friends but ends up being bullied by the F4 group. Dao Ming Zi feels san chai is different than other for having the courage to get back at him and ends up falling for her. The storyline is completely alike. I can’t believe the writers dared to even put this in the drama when it’s so blatant copying. However I do have to say that this type of storyline works in a dramas and actually is a nice twist. After watching Startling By Step, and since the characters in the dramas have the same name, I keep on making referring back to the drama expecting her to encounter the king or made a good impression with people with power. In the past two chinese historical dramas, the main female character were loved and protected by all the male leads and the male leads all happened to either be a high ranking official or had hidden influence that is able to protect the main female lead. I really like that type of storyline and felt that it was so romantic however, we do not usually see that type of storyline in modern dramas since the heroine usually fights for herself. I actually like the twist where you see a different storyline than the typical ancient drama and is quite surprised how the writer actually reminded us about the plot in meteor garden that has been popular in taiwan, japan, korea, and china.
ep 13- chin chuang ask 4th prince of he is happy or sad that she has left the palace and is guarding the tomb. THe thing is they never started. 4th Prince was always scheming for her death to advance himself. How can love happen between them. ep20- 4th prince comes randomly out of nowhere and takes her to a place and confesses that he wants to be with her. I can understand why he would fall for her since she saved him from assassination and looked out for him even when he tried to kill her, but I can’t find any reason why Qing Chuan would fall for 4th prince. 4th prince has never done anything for her aside from the most recent saving her and earlier saving her from being raped. Aside from knowing that the 4th prince would later become the emperor, he hasn’t done anything sweet that would make her fall for him. Normally it’s difficult for them to see each other i thought consort De was a kindhearted mother but when it comes to who would be emperor she still favored her own sons. The crown prince was just being manipulated by her. ep21 unknowingly i have shipped qing chuan and 8th prince together. they look like the perfect couple. Qing Chuan is fanning the flames to the brother’s destruction. 4th prince and 8th prince were planning to give up the throne for her sake but since qing chuan left 4th prince, she’s bringing him back on the path to fight for the throne yet 8th prince who doesn’t want to throne, is being pushed for the throne since Qing Chuan doesn’t want the cold hearted 4th prince to have the throne. ep25 the story seems to be shifting toward 8th prince and mongolian princess being together. Don’t really like that. The princess and 8th prince seems to have chemistry together. I can’t believe she breaks up with him so easily. She felt that the mongolian princess is so pretty and knowledgable and was a better match for 8th prince so she decided to break up with him. That such a stupid reason to break up ep27- can’t believe xiao chun would harm Qing Chuan. Before he was willing to risk his life for her now he is using her as a bait. How can the shoes burnt look good. It was a pretty green and yellow color now it’s completely black. ep30 can the writer be any less creative, a twin. I feel like they are just dragging this story out. ep31- they shouldn’t test out things that everyone know. They should use secrets that only both know to test each other out like asking her where they first met or which century they came from.
